The shoulder is regarded as one of the most complex joints in the body and requires a comprehensive assessment by one of our physiotherapists to determine the exact cause of pain and prescribe an extensive individually tailored treatment plan to get your shoulder functioning at its best again.
Common causes include:
- rotator cuff injury/tear
- muscle imbalance/instability issues
- frozen shoulder
- bony injury (fracture)
- referred pain from the cervicothoracic region.
Shoulder and neck pain are closely linked and often one affects the other, whether you have slept awkwardly and woken with a stiff shoulder or you carry tension from the general stresses of day-to-day life. Our physiotherapists are able to determine the reason for your pain. Often it is easily treated to give you immediate relief.
Symptoms can include:
- pain in the front, back, top of or side of shoulder that can refer down the arm and into the elbow or hand.
- pain from the neck referring down into the shoulder blades and into the arm itself
- weakness in using the arm
- instability and giving way
- numbness or ‘pins and needles’ extending into the arm.
Treatment for shoulder pain will include manual therapy treatment such as joint and soft tissue mobilisation, dry needling and muscle energy techniques. An individualised exercise program will be prescribed to both strengthen the weak muscles and mobilise the taut tissues identified in the assessment. The rehabilitation program will be functional in returning to your normal work, sport or general activities.
