Hand and Wrist Pain

Hand and Wrist Pain
We use our hands in almost every activity of daily living; for instance, at work, cooking, cleaning, driving, in sport or at the gym. If an injury occurs to the wrist or hand, it can be severely debilitating and make even simple tasks challenging. While most injuries of the wrist and hand can be put down to repetitive strain or a simple sprain from an impact injury, there are more complex issues that must not be missed when diagnosing pain at these joints.
Common causes include:
- strain or sprain of
- tendon/muscle/ligament from
- overuse or injury
- carpal tunnel syndrome
- rheumatism
- arthritis
- fracture

Symptoms can include:
- weakness in the wrist and reduced grip strength,
- pain on lifting/gripping
- limited range of motion
- inability to do work or home tasks without increasing pain in the wrist or hand. Pain may be experienced at the time of activity or days after.
Treatment
Treatment will usually include various manual therapy techniques to help relieve pain and improve mobility and freedom of movement. Individual exercises will be prescribed for the condition to improve range of motion and strength. A review of work ergonomics (desk/computer set-up) or the technique of the aggravating activity will usually be assessed and changed as required. A splint may be fitted should the physiotherapist advise your wrist needs rest from aggravating movement and time to heal.
