Pilates

What Is Pilates
Clinical Pilates is a form of Pilates that focuses on posture, core strengthening, balance, control, strength, flexibility and breathing. It is often used in conjunction with physical therapy to help with rehabilitation after injury or surgery. It is particularly effective in resolving chronic low back pain through strengthening and retraining core/stabilisation muscles to support your spine and posture.
Clinical Pilates is advocated for many injuries and types of pain along with general health and wellbeing. Its diversity is evident, being used by clinicians and individuals from all around the world, including elite athletes and performers.
At Active Sports and Spinal Physiotherapy, our Group Clinical Pilates classes are mat based and use equipment such as fitballs, hand weights, theraband and exercise balls. Classes are kept small for continuity of care for each of our patients and to provide effective guidance by one of our Physiotherapists.
Why It Works
Clinical Pilates works by performing a program of exercises that strengthen your deep abdominal, spinal and pelvic floor muscles as well as the hip and pelvic muscles. It helps the patient restore normal movement patterns and timing of muscle activation for improved efficiency of body movement.
Clinical Pilates is functional, targeted and individualised rehabilitation that is effective for reducing pain, disability and improving function. Exercises are instructed by one of our trained Physiotherapists who understands how this form of training aids in injury and healing
