Before And After Surgery Rehabilitation

It has been scientifically proven that patients have better outcomes when they undergo a rehabilitation program before (prehab) and after surgery. Many people have benefited so much from their prehab that surgery has been postponed or cancelled.

Prehab is participation in therapy-based movements and exercises in order to avoid injury, decrease pain or to prepare for surgery. It can address deficits in strength, stability, range of motion, balance and overall joint function. With injury or long-term muscle or joint dysfunction, incorrect or inefficient movement patterns and compensatory movements can slip into our normal everyday function. This can cause the deficits mentioned above, which need to be corrected and improved to achieve the best outcomes after surgery. It has been proven that an effective prehab program can improve outcomes, reduce the time to achieve excellent function and reduce complications after surgery. The outcomes can sometimes lead to postponing surgery as function can be significantly improved.

Rehabilitation is a vital post-surgical program of re-establishing joint motion and function, and muscle strength around the joint. It is crucial to be given the correct exercises to do and be progressed in the correct time frame. The physiotherapist is an expert in analysing joint and muscle activity, balance, and walking and running patterns. The deficits in these need to be addressed for best outcomes and to achieve a return to sport or general activity at the optimum level. When these deficits are not addressed, they tend to become long-term problems with a less than optimal level of function. In due course, the joints or muscles compensate for ongoing pain and a further cycle of pain and loss of function entails.

At Active Sports and Spinal Physiotherapy, patients are assessed for whatever deficits need addressing and are given a progressive program to achieve excellent outcomes. The physiotherapist will usually also use hands-on techniques to maximise the benefit to the patient. We are committed to our patients achieving their goals and maximising function.

We offer Hydrotherapy and Pilates as part of our rehabilitation programs if appropriate. We can also liaise with your fitness centre staff to help achieve higher goals in a gym or pool setting.

Frank Mount Evelyn

I have been going to this clinic for over 3 years after suffering near-fatal injuries from a car accident. The Physiotherapists who have been treating me have all been very caring, gentle and courteous whilst ensuring all of my needs were met. There was never an issue that they did not overcome with either treatment or the supply of ergonomic devices. My treatment is coming to an end as I now progress onto self-managing my health and wellbeing with regular sessions at the local gym, which they also organised. The administration staff are fantastic people who also treated me with the utmost respect and assistance. Thanks, Team!!!
